Explore. Question. Discover.
Ancient Europe is built on published scientific research and established datasets from a range of disciplines, including geology, palaeogeography, archaeology, palaeoecology and climate science.
Many of the maps presented in the atlas are original reconstructions created by combining and integrating datasets from different scientific sources. The references therefore form an essential part of the atlas: they document the research underlying each layer and help make the methods and sources transparent.
We place particular importance on acknowledging the researchers and authors whose work contributes to Ancient Europe. Where datasets, reconstructions or scientific interpretations are used, we aim to clearly identify their original authors and publications.
References will be provided throughout the atlas, allowing users to explore the scientific research behind the maps and discover the studies on which they are based.
Ancient Europe does not replace the original research. It brings existing scientific knowledge together in a new spatial and visual framework, making connections between disciplines and datasets that are otherwise difficult to explore.
